Spinning Tomorrow’s Light; A Storytelling Intensive for Tellers, Educators, Practitioners & Change-Makers

DSC06389

Three storytellers, Jenni Cargill-Strong, Susan Perrow and Iris Curteis, have come together to bring you three paths into the art of telling tales:

To Heal the Earth, educate people and engage them deeply with environmental issues;

To Grow Stories from Metaphor Seeds and offer a therapeutic journey for the storyteller and listener;

To See Your Life as an Unfolding Work of Art and shift into a ‘new form of thinking’.

Stories to Heal the Earth – Jenni Cargill-Strong’s Environmental Storytelling is a powerful way to not only educate people, but also engage them more deeply with environmental issues. Stories speak to the heart and soul, not just the mind. Jenni will teach two approaches to oral storytelling for environmental education: how to craft an original environmental story for a purpose and techniques on how to use folktales ‘as hooks’ to engage listeners in specific issues.

Jenni Cargill-Strong, B. A. Grad. DipEd has worked as a professional storyteller since 1993 and teaches a storytelling unit at Southern Cross University. She is member of the Board of the Healing Story Alliance and initiated and contributed to their new ‘Healing the Earth’ page. Her five award winning story recordings feature environmental stories and tales to foster co-operation and community mindedness. Her story albums will also be available at the workshop.

Growing Therapeutic Stories from Metaphor Seeds – Susan Perrow passionately believes ‘stories know the way’! She writes, collects and documents stories that offer a therapeutic journey for the storyteller and listener – a positive, imaginative way of helping resolve challenging situations.  In this session, using individual and community story examples, she will focus on the power of metaphor in story writing. The group will be involved in some metaphor mapping and a mini story making exercise.

Susan Perrow, M.Ed.has an extensive background in teaching, writing and storytelling. She is based in Australia but travels internationally giving workshops and training seminars for teachers, parents and therapists – in Africa, Europe, the US, the UK, Asia and China. Her story work has led to the publication of two resource books in seven languages: ‘Healing Stories for Challenging Behaviour’ and ‘Therapeutic Storytelling – 101 Healing Stories for Children’ (Hawthorn Press, U.K.). They will be on sale at the workshop.

Social Artist and Storyteller, Iris Curteis will show you how to play with folktales empower creative thinking and overcome the blind-spots that have us collectively re-enacting dysfunctional patterns and creating outcomes none of us individually want. Do you want to be a change-maker in your own life and contribute to change in your communities? You can start by gently exploring your life through metaphors and images, recognising yourself in the framework of a story and seeing your life as an unfolding work of art. With storytelling, drawing, conversation, ‘mapping’ and creative writing, Iris will provide tools to support your shift into a ‘new form of thinking’.

Iris inherited storytelling from her grandmother, adding formal studies in Visual Art, Storytelling, Speechformation and Dramatic Art (Europe), a B.A. and B.A. Hon. in Creative Writing and Ph.D. on Storytelling, Community Building and Social Responsibility (Australia).
